Pets de Sœurs
Les Pets de Sœurs, or in english “Nun’s Farts” are a Quebec dessert similar to a pinwheel but with an intriguing name! It is not clear as to where the name comes from, however there are theories that it relates to Quebec’s love/hate relationship with the Catholic church. The Roman Catholic church was extremely powerful in the early days of Quebec’s history, running it as their little Kingdom with many squashing the rights of the villagers and townsfolk. One way for the settlers to rebel against this “supreme executive power” was to make many a Catholic term a swear word. As a result, many of Quebec’s profane swear words are based upon Catholic church references such as Sacrament (sacrament), Chalice (calice), Christ (crisse), Host (ostie) and Tabernacle (tabarnac). And if you were REALLY upset, you would combine them together for something like “ostie calice de tabarnac”! So out of all this was also born this sweet delectable desert with a controversial name!
Ingredients:
1 roll of Pillsbury Pie dough (Or you can use homemade pie dough)
½ cup Melted semi-salted butter.
½ cup of brown sugar
About a dozen whole pecans.
Method:
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees (F). Unroll the pie dough and set it on a flat surface. With a pastry brush, brush the dough on one side thoroughly with some of the melted butter. Sprinkle a good amount of brown sugar over the dough covering it to the edge. Gently roll the dough into a cylindrical shape. Use a bit of butter to close the end of the dough. Cut disks about 1 inch thick and gently place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Gently bend down the upper edges of each pastry to form a shape reminiscent of a flower. Spoon over a teaspoon of melted butter over each pastry. Place a pecan in the middle of each pastry and sprinkle with additional brown sugar. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes (Or until lightly golden). Remove from the oven and let cool. The brown sugar will have melted and created a candy like texture around each pastry. You can lift this from the parchment paper and place it on top of each Pets de Sœur.
Enjoy with a tall glass of milk.
